Poker Trip Report

World Series of Poker T+12,13

I have to stop this posting every two days thing, I can barely remember what I had for dinner tonight.

Yesterday I watched some of the final table of the 3K limit holdem. Mike Laing was doing his Mike Tyson impression; somehow David Plastik had said something to annoy him and now Mike was constantly hurling insults at him between gulps of beer. I've seen Mike be obnoxious while attempting to be vaguely amusing, today he skipped the amusing part. He received a couple of warnings and was very close to getting a penalty but somehow avoided that. For his finale he spilled a full cup of coffee over the table prompting an early 10 minute break, then came back and bluffed away his huge stack of chips. During the match they announced that the Chan vs. Seidel match was scheduled for 5pm, then a little later that it was moved to 8:30pm. I really wanted to watch that, but I also wanted to play the Mirage $120+100 limit holdem tourney at 7pm so decided to do that instead, for $220 I could win $3500, that's a buy in to two 1.5K events; I played pretty well but got no cards and ended up a few out of the money. The good news was that when I got back I found out that the Chan Seidel match never happened and is now scheduled for Sunday, I suspect they canceled because they knew I wasn't there.

Yesterday was the Razz, the numbers were way down again from last year, this whole week has been down after staying somewhat steady last week (compared to last year). One reason may be that there are some weird events this week like Razz, stud hi/lo and lowball (although the Omaha high with rebuys today had 13 less players, but enough rebuys to make up the difference) so people may be staying away and coming back next week when there are some more popular events, and also the $1,500 events that I'm waiting for. The super sats are also way down this week, only 4 tables and one seat tonight. I don't know if the 6% is taking its toll on attendance, I wouldn't have thought so yet, I more expect that to be an issue with the more expensive events coming up soon. As for the 'boycott', I certainly haven't seen any evidence of that, every famous name in the world that I can think of has been here during this WSOP, but I guess there are a few players who have decided not to come for various reasons. I saw in another thread someone saying that said the players aren't being treated well, again, I've seen no evidence of that either, the events have all been extremely well run (but I haven't been playing so I don't know if there are some bad dealers), mostly right on time, lots of play, correct chip counts, almost no abuse, they have a nice free lunch of deli type sandwiches, and a decent free buffet at the dinner break, plus it's easy enough to get a $10 comp for most restaurants, there's still plenty of side action although I'm sure it's way down from last year, and there's no smoke upstairs (except when someone decides to light up right outside the door, and sometimes it's pretty bad in the hallway, but not in the actual tournament area).

Today I went over to Bellagio, they had a lot of tables going, then got back in time tonight to play one of the PokerStars freerolls, cleverly getting disconnected with 11 people left, but got back in time for the final table and came 3rd. (just three places ahead of our very own Peg Smith, well done Peg), I blew it on an open ended draw in the end, but I still managed to watch all of Survivor while I was playing, I'm beginning to think I play much better when I'm totally distracted.

Tomorrow is the hi-lo Stud and the final table of the Omaha High, quite a few big names there with Brent Carter one of the chip leaders. The next day is the 3K pot limit holdem so that means I can start playing some satellites again.
