the poker scene from where I'm from is just in it's infintile stage.. close to being dead anyways if new blood doesn't come in quick. Usually I think 6mo to a year depending on the population size and quality of players at that time. New players will love the game and play quite lose.. but soon when experienced players move in it's enevitable that they (the loose players) will keep losing and either be discouraged at the large losses or become better players. Those that like the game just can't get good usually I feel stay at low limits, where others play similarly or where there is a minimum loss for the evening. So I think once a solid bunch of good players start coming out consistantly the game will improve, until then you may have to guard the grill.
A good point to note is that the game is also excellent at this time if you bring 3-4 friends who can play decent. You'll all be picking on the fish together, I'd imagine you could each walk away in profit.
