it seems that party poker needs a different strategy than what is 'normal' because of all the fish who will call anything and everything. i have won consistently at ultimate bet and pokerstars, but i played party for the first time in a while tonight and immediately lost $300 (NL).

among some of my beats were raising all-in preflop w/ KK and getting beat with 4 hearts on the table (opponent had AhQs)

flopped trip 8's with K, K came on turn, 10 came on river.... guy had K-10

anyway i just want some input on how to handle all the fish at PP. How do you guys do it?

I am not sure i would call all in with aqo or kt, but depending on how much your all in was, and how much the other guy had that might not be too bad of a call.

It is kinda harsh to be beat by 4 hearts on the table but if you were all in preflop it's not like he was actually fishing, he had not chance to fold.

And if you get to a flop with a pair and a king and you have the king, unless the betting is rediculous you have to figure it's not too likely someone else has the eight, and no one is likely to pair an ace to beat your kings.

If you did bet hard in that situation, the guy might have thought you were bluffing and decided he had a real hand and was gonna make you pay to put up a bluff.

I playing in a NL tourney, 4 people left. I got big slick suited, bet all in for $1300, another guy calls my all in on the bb (bb was 50) flops 23249. The guy beat me with 2s full of 3s. It was a suited 23 but still not something I can understand calling a 1300 raise for. Now that is a bad beat.

I had the same thing happen to me, only I went all in when an ace fell on the river, and he caught the wheel on the river. Makes you want to smack somebody.

Save your money and don't play online. Anyone who tells you then have come out positive online over a 6 month period is a liar. When half the table is willing to call with junk, your premium hands will almost never win. I am convinced that if you sat 10 players down in an online game and did not allow rebuys, the rake would eat up all money in play before one polayer took everyone out.

Is your handle 'smartguy' an oxymoron?

Smartguy,I have talked to many people who play low limit tables on party and have made significant profit online playing for at least 6 months, of course I cant proof that they are not liars, but I dont think they are.
I personally have made a profit of $300 from playing 0.5/1 limit on party for about the last month and had previously made a small profit playing one or two $10 sit and goes a night on party for about seven months before that - I now prefer the tournaments on ultimate bet where I am up about $50 for the last 3 weeks (playing $5 - $10 tournies), but not really playing them regularly.
I am not really playing to make a big profit , I primarily just play for enjoyment so am glad to a made a small profit and have not had to continually deposit money into my account.

In low limit games the fact that half the table calls to see the flop makes them very easy to profit from because you get a lot action when you hit big hands so you just have to be patient.
From the sounds of it you are placing too much emphasis on the premium hands, I win my biggest pots with hands like 78s, AXs and low pocket pairs. The simple rule is dont go past the flop unless you hit it big or have a big draw eg. 4 flush, open ended straight.

Brains I have to agree with your last statement about pp. If you can't be trips, you probably won't win. AK with k85 on the flop is usually not a winner. That in mind, maybe if I changed my strategy to bear that in mind I might make some money, but it would probably screw me up at other games.

I moved to UB and the play is MUCH more solid there. I win slightly more because my play is solid enough, and when I loose it is usually to a solid play also.

i stopped playing party poker a few days after i posted that, after losing a total of around $500. i was so frustrated that if i had tried playing more, i would probably be playing on tilt. i even deleted party poker off my system.

the thing is that i have won and still am winning very consistently on UB (and poker stars, to a smaller extent, but i stopped playing there too) in the past few weeks. i wanted to migrate to pp cause the games are a little more frequent, as UB only has around 3 50c/1 and 1/2 NL games going usually.

i will just stick with the winning situation and play UB from now on.

I agree with you on that point, this is why I moved to UB for NL tournies. The players there are better and therefore I find easier to read.

On party it is nearly impossible to read most of the players because they constantly make basic errors in their actions which you would never predict (ie. they call, bet, reraise, bluff and slow play at the wrong times) . In limit you will get a lot of bad beats , but at least your losses are limited when you misread a strong hand. In NL tournies (and cash games) you are punished severely when you misread a hand.
