First Day Playing For a Living!

Wednesday, August 8, 2007

By: Acevader

Well I'm back from my holidays and 'poker for a living' is now underway. My break up north wasn't as good as usual for a number of reasons - mainly the weather - but it was a welcomed rest from doing or thinking about anything.

I spent most of Monday cleaning out all the crap from my computer, defragging it and getting my desk space ready to go. I played poker today for a total of 4 hours starting off at NL$200 two tabling and playing 4 tables by the end of the day. 4 hours isn't great for a days work but I'm not putting any great pressure on myself to immediately start smashing out big poker hours, healthy eating and exercise now that I'm back from holiday. I view this week as an acclimatisation week with a view to increasing my discipline and commitment throughout the rest of August.

My poker was a little rusty but overall fairly sound. I got a little flustered here and there and made a few errors but overall I felt I played ok. My stats were 20/16/3.8 and I played 1121 hands at 8ptbb/100. It was one of those days were my two key profit hands were ones where I went in behind and won but that doesn't tell the whole story as I was also stacked when well ahead. In one example I turned the 2nd nut hand with a set of aces which, in turn, gave villain the nut hand (straight) and in the other my flopped two pair was 3-outed for a higher two pair.

The two hands I won where I put my money in behind were as follows:

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $1/$2 Blinds - 6 Players - (http://www.legopoker.com http://www.legopoker.com/hh)

SB: $71.35
BB: $880.60
UTG: $56.50
MP: $104.20
Hero (CO): $244.75
BTN: $244.90

Preflop: Hero is dealt 4s 6s (6 Players)
UTG folds, MP calls $2.00, Hero raises to $9.00, 3 folds, MP calls $7.00

Flop: ($21) 5s 3h 9d (2 Players)
MP checks, Hero checks

Turn: ($21) 4d (2 Players)
MP bets $21.00,
Hero raises all-in to $235.75,
MP calls all-in for $74.20
Uncalled bet of $140.55 returned to Hero
Uncalled bet of $0.00 returned to MP

River: ($211.40) 7c (2 Players - 2 All-In)

Pot Size: $211.40 ($3 Rake)

MP had 3c 3s (three of a kind, Threes) and LOST (-$104.20)
Hero had 4s 6s (a straight, Seven high) and WON (+$104.20)

I don't regret this hand as I believe I made the correct play in trying to peel a free improvement card. Whilst the 4 didn't help much it did further improve my outs against single pair and over-pair hands and I feel villain bets with a wide range of hands he won't necessarily felt here. I think to beat myself up over this hand would be really results orientated.

The other hand is:

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $1/$2 Blinds - 5 Players - (http://www.legopoker.com http://www.legopoker.com/hh)

Hero (SB): $521.45
BB: $132.45
UTG: $206.40
CO: $69.75
BTN: $213.95

Preflop: Hero is dealt Qc Qh (5 Players)
UTG folds,
CO calls $2.00,
BTN raises to $9.00,
Hero raises to $28.00,
2 folds,
BTN raises to $76.00,
Hero raises all-in to $521.45,
BTN calls all-in for $137.95
Uncalled bet of $0.00 returned to Hero

Flop: ($431.90) 4c 6c 2c (2 Players - 2 All-In)

Turn: ($431.90) Kc (2 Players - 2 All-In)

River: ($431.90) 9d (2 Players - 2 All-In)

Pot Size: $431.90 ($3 Rake)

BTN had Ad As (a pair of Aces) and LOST (-$213.95)
Hero had Qc Qh (a flush, King high) and WON (+$214.95)

In this hand villain and I had been 3-betting each other a fair bit and this was the first time I'd 4-bet him having laid down JJ to him before and having folded 66 in a battle of the blinds. In many ways it was unfortunate that I timed my 'stand' with a clash of QQ vs AA. I view this as a cooler given the stats of both players and the history between us.

It's a bit of a mind-fuck to be up from suck outs but I have to remind myself that it could so easily have been the case that I was up by holding up with my good hands and losing these ones - six and half a dozen as they say.

My game still has a long way to come yet though and I'll have to work really hard to continuously improve it. There were a number of other interesting hands, some of which I've posted on 2+2 (Acevader) but I don't intend on bogging the blog down with hand after hand. Suffice to say I played 'ok' on my first day but have a lot of work ahead of me.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all those for their comments and support over the last few weeks since I took my decision to go for it - it has really encouraged me.
